Anyone who deals with even the basics of hair care quickly comes across the terms conditioner and rinse. But what exactly is the difference, or is there a difference, or are these simply two names for one and the same product? I'll explain it to you here – short and sweet!
Short Answer: Difference Between Conditioner and Rinse
In fact, rinse and conditioner refer to exactly the same product, and there is no difference. Conditioner is the English and internationally more common term, while rinse is the German name.
It always refers to a treatment that you apply after washing your hair, which helps to detangle the hair and close the outer cuticle. The result is smoother and often softer hair.
What the product is called usually depends on the brand. German brands often stick to the German word "Spülung" (rinse), while international brands mostly use the word conditioner.
What Does a Rinse and Conditioner Do?
- perfect supplementary care for your hair care routine
- smoothes the hair
- gives a great shine
- seals the outer cuticle of the hair
- improves combability
- provides moisture
- protects against damage

How to Choose the Ideal Hair Rinse
Choose the conditioner that matches your hair type and problems. For example, if you have curly hair, a light, non-weighing curl conditioner is the perfect choice.
Dry hair benefits from intensely hydrating rinses, while light anti-frizz formulas are ideal for fine hair. For a perfectly coordinated care routine, it is also advisable to use all products from the same care series to ensure your hair benefits fully.

Application of Conditioner or Rinse
First, wash your hair as usual with shampoo. After rinsing, squeeze out excess water from the lengths and then evenly apply your rinse/conditioner to the lengths and ends. Do not apply to the hairline – conditioner can weigh down the hair and make it look flat on the head. Then let it sit briefly and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Special Forms of Rinses: Leave-in Conditioner and Deep Conditioner
The difference between a classic rinse and conditioner lies in the application of the leave-in conditioner. You can apply leave-in treatments to damp hair before styling and do not have to rinse them out afterwards.
Leave-in conditioners help to improve combability, make hair even smoother, and often contain heat protection, so you can protect your hair from damage caused by styling heat.
Deep conditioners are intensive treatments, also known as hair masks or repair treatments. The difference to rinses is that hair masks do not act superficially and for a short time, but deeply within the hair. Due to their long-term effect, you only need to use masks once a week or every three washes.

You apply these similarly to normal conditioner after washing your hair to the lengths and ends. To allow the boost of important nutrients to work deep within the hair, a longer application time of up to ten minutes is often necessary. Then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. And only then comes the normal hair rinse – for the sealing effect!
Maggie's tip: I usually use the longer application times of deep conditioners for a thorough body scrub.
