With eyeshadow, you can beautifully highlight and accentuate your eyes. Whether you want to create an everyday look or conjure up a creative look for an exciting party, with eyeshadow, your imagination and creativity are boundless. Learn here with my short guide how to apply eyeshadow correctly and which mistakes you can super easily avoid.
How to Apply Eyeshadow Correctly: The Quick Guide
- Prepare eyelids with a primer or an eyeshadow base
- Select three shades and prime the mobile lid with the medium one
- Apply the darker color with a fluffy brush in the crease
- With the lightest shade, set accents in the inner corner of the eye and under the brow bone
- Carefully blend the transitions
The Right Preparation
As with any makeup look, you should prepare your skin beforehand and moisturize it with a skincare routine tailored to your skin. Specially selected active ingredients and formulas help to even out small bumps and irregularities in your skin.
In our blog, you'll find various posts on active ingredients and different skin types, and how to best care for them.
Prepare The Eyelid
No matter what eyeshadow texture you use, proper preparation of your eyelids helps make your eyeshadow look last particularly long. This way, the texture won't settle into fine lines, disappear throughout the day, and will instead look particularly color-intensive and even.
Apply a primer to your eyelids or use an eyeshadow base to make your eyeshadow look particularly long-lasting.
You don't need much product; a rice-grain sized amount of eyeshadow base is often enough for both eyelids to prepare them perfectly for eyeshadow.

The Choice of Eyeshadows
With eyeshadows, it's not just about the colors, which you can choose according to your personal taste, but also about the textures.
Powder eyeshadow is the classic and provides the most intense color result thanks to its particularly high pigment density. With powder, a distinction is made between pressed and loose eyeshadow – pressed powder eyeshadow is ideal for makeup beginners and a must-have.
Loose eyeshadow requires more practice, as it is not entirely easy to handle. The loose pigments require some skill. Both loose and pressed powder eyeshadows are very sensitive to moisture and can quickly settle in the crease.
Especially practical about powder eyeshadows is their compact format in eyeshadow palettes, where you can easily combine matching shades or mix them as desired.

However, there are also cream eyeshadows and liquid textures that can be easily applied with one stroke and then only need to be blended with your finger to achieve an intense result. Cream eyeshadows are considered particularly long-lasting, while for liquid eyeshadows, you should definitely use an eyeshadow base so that the texture does not settle in the crease.
Cream to liquid textures are, however, more difficult to blend, but they have a higher opacity than many powder textures and are ideal for creating special highlights on the eyes.
In stick or pencil form, creamy textures are perfect for on the go or while traveling, to refresh makeup in between or to create great looks on vacation with just a few products.

The Right Tools
For a stunning eyeshadow look, some tools are also helpful to facilitate application and ensure a more even result:
- Eyeshadow Primer or Base: An absolute essential for a flawless look!
- Brushes: With the right brushes, you achieve soft transitions and ensure an even result on the eyes.
- Concealer: Concealer completes your eye look and not only conceals darker undereye circles but can also correct some mistakes without having to remove your entire makeup.
- Setting Spray: Sets your makeup, especially your eye makeup with eyeshadow.
But you should also be able to accept that your fingers get "dirty" for a successful eyeshadow result.

Applying Eyeshadow: Step-by-Step Guide
After you have prepared your eyelids with a primer or an eyeshadow base, it's time for the actual eyeshadow look. It's best to select three eyeshadow shades beforehand that come from the same color category.
For everyday wear, brown shades work very well, for example, a brown tone that is slightly darker than your skin tone, then a shade that is minimally darker, and one that is lighter. The latter can also lean towards beige or, if you like sparkle, a shimmery silver or gold tone.

Prime the Mobile Lid
Start with your medium shade and apply it all over the mobile part of your eyelids. It's best to use a flat brush for this and tap off any excess pigment before applying to prevent a crumbly or uneven result.
Define the Crease
Now, take a finer brush and apply the darkest shade into your crease. You can see the exact placement particularly well if you keep your eye open while doing this.
Blending
Now comes my favorite part – blending! Use a thin, fluffy brush and move it over the crease to create a soft transition there, but also where the two shades meet, you can carefully blend.
Set Highlights
Now, use a fine, small brush to set beautiful accents with your lightest shade in the inner corner of the eye and under the brow bone, which will make your eyes appear optically larger.
Applying Eyeshadow for Hooded Eyes
Hooded eyelids are often genetically determined or are related to skin aging and the associated loss of skin elasticity. There are surgical procedures to counteract hooded eyelids.
But honestly: With a few simple steps, you can redefine your hooded eyelids with eyeshadow and make your eyes appear optically larger.
For your eyeshadow look, you should definitely keep these two things in mind for a successful result:
- Placement in the crease: Due to the heavy eyelids, it makes more sense not to apply the dark tone directly into the crease and emphasize it even more, but rather a little above it and blend upwards.
- Highlights: Definitely apply a highlighter or light tone under your brow bone to make your eyes appear optically larger.
Which Colors Suit Which Eye Color?
Blue Eyes
For blue eyes, apricot to rosé eyeshadows are particularly suitable, but beige and brown are also a great choice. Shimmering eyeshadows in gold, bronze, and champagne also beautifully accentuate blue eyes.

Green Eyes
You can expertly highlight green eyes with red tones like copper, rosé, and also plum tones. Cool tones like silver, grey, or a cool brown also make your eyes sparkle beautifully.
Gray Eyes
Most eyeshadow colors suit gray eyes; it's best to orient yourself by the undertone of your eye color. You can then choose your eyeshadow colors accordingly.
Brown Eyes
For warm, brown eyes, you can wonderfully opt for cool tones like purple, anthracite, and plum – these will make your eyes shine even more. But also with turquoise, khaki, and gray, you'll create an impressive effect.

Common Mistakes When Applying Eyeshadow
With these tips, you can easily avoid common mistakes and thus messy results:
- Do your eye makeup first, so you can easily wipe away falling particles without ruining your foundation.
- Always tap your brushes briefly after picking up color, so that not too many particles fall onto your face and the overall result looks more even.
- High-quality tools can make a huge difference to your look. They last longer and can make textures look much better on the skin.
- Caring for your tools is also important. Make sure to clean your makeup sponges and brushes regularly. This is not only important for a clean, true-to-color result, but also significantly more hygienic. Over time, bacteria can accumulate on the tools, which can also cause skin irritation.
I hope this blog post has helped you with your eye makeup application. I wish you lots of fun applying and recreating! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
