Hypochlorous acid seems to be the sensation of the year: everyone is talking about this novel active ingredient, which is said to be particularly beneficial for acne-prone skin. I took a closer look at the ingredient, tested it myself, and here I'll tell you everything you need to know about hypochlorous acid!
What Is Hypochlorous Acid?
Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid molecule composed of oxygen, hydrogen, and chlorine. It also occurs naturally in our bodies, as it is produced by white blood cells and helps our immune system fight bacteria and infections.
Hypochlorous acid has a similar effect in skincare – it is antibacterial and soothing, while also reducing inflammation. Ideal for acne, rosacea, eczema, and perioral dermatitis.

Benefits of Hypochlorous Acid for the Skin
Here is an overview of the specific advantages of hypochlorous acid:
- It has antibacterial properties
- Relieves redness and swelling
- Soothes the skin
- Effective against unwanted bacteria (destroys their cell walls so they can no longer multiply)
- Supports skin regeneration
- Balances the skin microbiome
- Effective for various skin problems such as acne, eczema, rosacea and perioral dermatitis
Product Recommendations Containing Hypochlorous Acid
Hypochlorous acid is used in many medical creams and wound care solutions thanks to its wound-healing and antibacterial properties.
In cosmetic products, hypochlorous acid is primarily found in serums, sprays, and toners/facial washes. It is too unstable for cream formulations.
The concentrations range from 0.01 to 0.02% – start slowly and try out products over a period of a few weeks.

Hypochlorous Acid in The Test
A spray that kills bad bacteria on the skin? That immediately piqued my interest, and I went ahead and bought a Hypochlorous Acid Spray. I'm generally a fan of spray formats – I feel like I'm not wasting any on a cotton pad, and it's much quicker to use than pouring toner into my hand.
I chose Acnemy Zitaid because I've only had positive experiences with Acnemy products so far, and my skin has always tolerated them very well. Before the first use, I was even warned that the spray would smell like a swimming pool (because of the chlorine molecules). But I have to say, when I sprayed it normally on my face, I didn't even notice the smell.
The spray is very fine, and I like to apply it more liberally to other areas as well, such as my décolletage and back. I'm prone to blemishes in both of these areas – especially if I decide to shower at home instead of directly at the gym.
My whole skincare routine is just too much of a hassle to carry around, but I now always have the Acnemy Zitaid spray with hypochlorous acid in my gym bag!
Our graphic designer at PURISH, Ron, is also thrilled with the effects of the Hypochlor spray. "Especially when I've been sweating a lot, I usually get blemishes quite often. With the spray, I get blemishes much less frequently now," Ron explains.
Ron was particularly impressed by hypochlorous acid's versatility and good tolerability: "I can recommend it to everyone before shaving, or even after, if you can tolerate it, and simply for in-between uses." He has also recommended such sprays to many friends.
Ron has absolutely nothing against the swimming pool smell: "I love the smell! I associate chlorine with cleanliness, as I also use it for my white laundry and it makes me feel like my face is really clean and free of bad bacteria."
Application of Hypochlorous Acid
Before using hypochlorous acid, you should thoroughly cleanse your face and gently pat it dry with a towel. Then spray the product evenly from a distance of 15 to 20 centimeters.
If desired, you can also apply it to other areas prone to blemishes. Be sure to let the spray absorb completely before applying any other products.
Hypochlorous acid is a strong oxidizing agent – therefore, you should definitely wait several hours before applying antioxidants such as vitamin C.
You can vary the frequency of application to suit your individual needs – from occasionally, for example after sports, to twice a day, anything is possible. Increase the frequency of application slowly and observe your skin for any reactions.
Combination with Other Ingredients
Hypochlorous acid can be combined with almost all ingredients. However, caution is advised when using retinoids and fruit acids. This combination can lead to irritation, especially in sensitive skin. It's best to apply them separately, perhaps as part of a routine.
