Vitamin C in cosmetics: Everything you should know

Vitamin C is one of the best-known and most effective ingredients in skincare. Also known as ascorbic acid or in more stable derivatives such as ascorbyl glucoside or 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, vitamin C is found in many serums, creams, and treatments. The ingredient is particularly valued for its versatility and its role in modern skincare routines.

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can protect the skin from external environmental influences such as free radicals. In skincare, it is primarily used to give the complexion a fresher appearance and refine the overall skin texture. Depending on the formulation, vitamin C can be easily integrated into various skincare routines.

Effects of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a versatile ingredient and is used in cosmetics for several reasons, including the following:

  • It helps to make the complexion appear more even.
  • It helps the skin to appear fresher and more radiant.
  • It can protect the skin from oxidative stress.
  • It is frequently used in formulas that aim for a smoother skin appearance.
  • It is well suited for products that aim to balance a tired or dull complexion.

Due to its antioxidant properties, vitamin C is particularly popular in daily skincare, especially in combination with sunscreen.

Who is Vitamin C suitable for?

Vitamin C is suitable for many skin types, especially normal, dry, and mature skin. It is also frequently used for dull or uneven-looking skin. Those with sensitive skin should opt for lower-dose or more stable vitamin C derivatives.

Use of Vitamin C

Vitamin C serums are ideally applied in the morning after cleansing and toning. A moisturizing cream is recommended afterwards, followed by sunscreen during the day. Regular use is crucial to achieve visible results in the skin's appearance.

Are there any side effects?

Vitamin C is generally considered well-tolerated. However, in high concentrations or with very sensitive skin, a slight tingling sensation may occur. In this case, it is recommended to reduce the frequency of application or to switch to milder derivatives.
