PDRN is one of those active ingredients that's currently unavoidable in the beauty world. Especially in Korean skincare, more and more PDRN serums, creams, and essences are appearing, promising regenerating, moisturizing, and anti-aging care. At the same time, the term "Salmon DNA" raises some questions: Does PDRN actually contain salmon DNA? And what can the active ingredient do for the skin? I'll explain what PDRN is, how it affects the skin, for whom PDRN skincare is suitable, and what you should consider when using it.
What is PDRN?
PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide and refers to purified DNA fragments. Traditionally, PDRN is obtained, among other sources, from the DNA of salmonids such as salmon or trout. Originally, the active ingredient primarily comes from the medical and aesthetic fields, but it is now increasingly found in cosmetic skincare products.
In skincare, PDRN is mainly used for its regenerating properties. Corresponding products are designed to support the skin's natural regeneration processes and ensure a hydrated, smoother, and plumper-looking complexion.

One distinction is particularly important: a PDRN serum or a PDRN cream is not comparable to a professional treatment where PDRN or polynucleotides are injected into the skin. Therefore, study results on medical or injected applications cannot be automatically transferred to cosmetic products.
Where does PDRN come from?
Classic PDRN is often derived from the DNA of salmonids. The extracted DNA strands are processed, purified, and broken down into smaller fragments. This is why PDRN skincare is often simply referred to as "salmon DNA" in simplified terms.
However, this does not mean that every product with PDRN must necessarily be of animal origin. Meanwhile, there are also ingredients on the cosmetics market that are marketed as plant-based or biotechnologically derived PDRN alternatives.
Is PDRN vegan?
Classic PDRN, derived from salmon or other fish, is not vegan. If you only use vegan cosmetics, you should therefore check the manufacturer's information on the origin of the ingredient.
Terms like "Plant PDRN" or "vegan PDRN" are now also used for cosmetic active ingredients. However, you should note that their origin and composition may differ from classic PDRN.
How does PDRN affect the skin?
PDRN is scientifically interesting primarily due to its use in regenerative medicine. In skincare, however, the focus is on cosmetically supporting a regenerated, hydrated, and smoother-looking complexion.

PDRN can support skin regeneration
One of the properties PDRN is known for is its connection with regeneration and repair processes. That's why the active ingredient is particularly popular in skincare aimed at stressed or regeneration-needing skin.
However, with cosmetic products, expectations should be realistic: a PDRN serum can complement a corresponding skincare routine, but it does not replace medical treatment and does not "repair" damaged skin overnight.
PDRN for more moisture and a strengthened skin barrier
PDRN skincare is often combined with moisturizing and barrier-strengthening active ingredients. This can make the skin appear smoother and plumper and feel less dry.
However, the extent of this effect does not depend solely on PDRN. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, or panthenol, and the overall formulation of the product, also play a decisive role.
PDRN against wrinkles and skin aging
PDRN receives a lot of attention as an anti-aging ingredient. By supporting regenerative processes, PDRN can be interesting for skin that shows initial signs of aging. A well-formulated PDRN product can contribute to a plumper, smoother, and overall more well-cared-for complexion.
It's important here too to distinguish it from aesthetic PDRN treatments: the results of professional applications cannot be directly transferred to a topically applied PDRN serum.

PDRN for sensitive and irritated skin
PDRN is also used in products for sensitive or stressed skin. The active ingredient can be part of a soothing and regeneration-oriented care.
However, for sensitive skin, the complete formulation always matters. A product does not automatically become particularly well-tolerated just because it contains PDRN.
What are the benefits of PDRN for the skin?
Depending on the product and formulation, PDRN can support different skin needs:
- Dehydrated skin: Can contribute to a hydrated and plumper complexion
- Dry skin: Can supplement regeneration-oriented and moisturizing care
- Mature skin: Interesting for a smoother and more elastic-looking complexion
- Stressed skin: Can support regeneration-oriented care
- Dull skin: Can contribute to a more vital and well-cared-for complexion
- Sensitive skin: Can be a component of soothing formulations

Which skin type is PDRN suitable for?
PDRN is less attributable to a specific skin type and more to various skin needs. The active ingredient can be particularly interesting for dry, dehydrated, mature, or stressed skin.
Normal and combination skin can also use PDRN. Here, light PDRN serums or essences that provide moisture without feeling too rich are suitable.
For impure or oily skin, you should primarily pay attention to the overall formulation. A light, non-comedogenic texture may be more suitable here than a rich PDRN cream.
How to use PDRN in skincare?
PDRN can now be found in various skincare products – most commonly in serums, essences, and creams. Where the product fits into your routine primarily depends on its texture.
A skincare routine with PDRN could look like this, for example:
- Cleanse your face with a mild cleanser.
- Use a toner or essence if needed.
- Apply your PDRN serum to your face and neck.
- Lock in moisture with a face cream.
- In the morning, finish with a sunscreen with a high SPF.
Generally, the same applies here: always follow the application recommendations of the respective product.
How often can PDRN be used?
How often you can use PDRN depends on the specific formulation. Many PDRN skincare products are designed for daily use and can be integrated into your routine in the morning and/or evening.
If your skin is sensitive or you are using several new active ingredients at once, it is worthwhile to introduce the product slowly at first. This way, you can better observe how your skin reacts to it.

Which active ingredients can be combined with PDRN?
PDRN can be combined with many well-known active ingredients in a skincare routine. Which combination makes sense primarily depends on your skin goal.
PDRN and Hyaluronic Acid
PDRN and hyaluronic acid are an interesting combination for dehydrated skin. Hyaluronic acid binds moisture and can thus provide a plumper complexion, while PDRN complements a regeneration-oriented skincare routine.
PDRN and Niacinamide
Niacinamide and PDRN can also be combined. Niacinamide supports the skin barrier, among other things, and is suitable for numerous skin types. This combination is therefore particularly interesting if you want to care for your skin and support its natural barrier at the same time.
PDRN and Peptides
PDRN and peptides are often found in anti-aging routines. Peptides are used in cosmetics to support a smooth and elastic-looking complexion. Together, the active ingredients can be part of a routine aimed at regeneration and skin aging.
PDRN and Retinol
In principle, PDRN and retinol or retinal can be part of the same skincare routine. However, it is crucial how well your skin tolerates the individual products.
Since retinoids can irritate the skin, especially at the beginning, care aimed at moisture and skin barrier can be useful. Also, consistently use sunscreen when on a retinoid routine.
PDRN and Vitamin C
Vitamin C and PDRN can also complement each other within a routine. Vitamin C is particularly known for its antioxidant properties and is often used for dull or uneven skin tone as well as in anti-aging routines.
PDRN Skincare vs. PDRN Treatment: What's the difference?
If you're researching PDRN's effects, you'll likely come across professional beauty treatments in addition to skincare products. Here, a clear distinction is important.
PDRN skincare is applied topically to the skin. This includes, for example, PDRN serums, creams, or essences. They are integrated into the daily routine just like other cosmetic skincare products.
In professional PDRN or polynucleotide treatments, on the other hand, corresponding substances are introduced into the skin, for example, via injection. This means that not only the application and penetration depth differ, but also the conditions under which the active ingredient is used.
Studies on injected PDRN are therefore not direct proof of efficacy for PDRN cosmetics. When evaluating a PDRN serum or cream, it is important to specifically look at findings on topical application and the specific formulation.
PDRN and polynucleotides: Is it the same thing?
PDRN and polynucleotides are closely related, but the terms should not be used interchangeably. Both consist of nucleotide chains or DNA-based fragments. Differences can exist, among other things, in the size or length of the DNA fragments used and their preparation.
Especially in the beauty sector, PDRN and polynucleotides are often mentioned together. For products and scientific studies, it is therefore worth paying close attention to which substance was actually studied or used.
Does PDRN have side effects?
With a cosmetic PDRN product, tolerability depends not only on PDRN but on the entire formulation. Other active ingredients, fragrances, or excipients contained can also cause reactions in sensitive skin.
If you have sensitive skin, you can test a new product on a small area of skin first. For known allergies, you should also pay attention to the origin of the PDRN and the manufacturer's information.
Side effects and risks of professional PDRN injections should be considered separately. Such applications belong in professional hands and are not to be equated with over-the-counter PDRN skincare.
I hope this blog post about PDRN has helped you and you've learned something new!
