A sleek look always exudes a certain elegance and beautifully accentuates the face. However, it's not always easy to achieve: I, for example, have had countless occasions where I almost gave up on the sleek look because of unruly hair and stray strands. So you don't have to despair, here are a few simple tips to easily create the clean-cut hairstyle favored by many!
What Is The Sleek Look?
The sleek look involves pulling all the hair back close to the head and tying it into either a braid or a bun. Even the tiniest baby hairs are perfectly styled and secured with gel or hairspray. The sleek style is suitable for all hair types and lengths and can be easily adapted to suit individual preferences.
The sleek braid or bun also impresses thanks to its glossy finish – a wet look is the extravagant version of the sleek look.
The sleek hairstyle is perfect for an elegant evening look or can provide a stylish upgrade for casual outfits by elegantly tying the hair back.
By the way: The sleek look is my favorite choice for the last day before washing my hair! A slightly oily root is even desirable here, as it makes it easier to style the hair.
Which Sleek Look Suits Your Face Shape?
The sleek look can be worn by both women and men. Choose a style you like! Not every sleek look has to be the same – small details make a big difference.
- A center parting looks particularly modern and harmonious. It visually elongates the face and is a perfect match for oval or round face shapes.
- A side parting adds a bit more drama to a sleek look and can soften angular facial features.
- Sleek Bun: A tight bun at the nape of the neck looks elegant and classic.
- In contrast, a high sleek braid or a half-open hairstyle (a ponytail or bun with the upper part of the hair, the rest remains loose) has a slight lifting effect and creates a particularly snatched look.
If you're unsure, just try different variations – often your personal feeling in front of the mirror will ultimately decide.
Step by Step: How To Achieve The Perfect Sleek Look
What you need:
- Hair gel or hair wax
- hairspray
- Tail comb
- Brush with boar bristles
- hair tie
- Optional: hair straightener and heat protection
- Some arm strength is required (styling the sleek look takes about 10-20 minutes depending on hair length. This can be quite tiring for the arms!)
Step 1: Brush your hair thoroughly. If desired, apply heat protectant and straighten your hair with a flat iron.
Step 2: Use the tail comb to create a short parting, approximately 5 cm long, and brush the remaining hair on the head with the boar bristle brush to shape it.
Step 3: Take a hazelnut-sized amount of hair gel or hair wax in your hand and apply it to your head in small amounts.
Step 4: Shape the hair on your head, paying attention to the back of the head if you have a ponytail or bun, and making sure there are no gaps through which you can see the scalp.
Step 5: Tie your hair into a sleek bun or braid. Alternatively, I think a half-up hairstyle is also a great option if you only tie the top section of your hair into a ponytail and leave the rest loose.
Step 6: If desired, you can finish by fixing your hairstyle with a little hairspray.

Sleek Look for Different Hair Types
The sleek hair look basically works for almost any hair type – you just have to proceed slightly differently.
- Fine hair: Use less product to prevent the hair from looking flat. A slight volume boost at the back of the head can help.
- Thick or unruly hair: Here, a little more gel or a stronger wax is needed. Working in small sections makes styling easier.
- Curly or wavy hair: Dampen your hair slightly before styling, focusing on the sections you want to keep sleek. On wash day, you can also apply a small amount of hair mask before gel to better tame your hair and give it some extra conditioning.
Typical Mistakes With The Sleek Look – And How to Avoid Them
With a sleek braid or bun, you can really see everything. That's why small mistakes can quickly become noticeable.
- Too much product: To achieve a sleek look, it's important not to use too much mousse or gel to avoid stickiness. Otherwise, your hair will quickly look greasy instead of glossy. It's better to work with small amounts and gradually increase the quantity.
- Insufficient tension when tying: The sleek style doesn't hold properly and develops bumps. Brush your hair back really tightly.
- Restless back of the head: Always check your sleek look with a second mirror.
- Dry ends: A tiny drop of hair oil in the lengths ensures a well-groomed finish.
- Crooked parting: A precise tail comb helps you to pull the parting really straight and carefully.
How to Take Care of Your Hair After the Sleek Look
The evening after creating your sleek look, you should definitely wash your hair thoroughly. Use a gentle shampoo and shampoo your scalp twice to remove all product residue and oil.
If you regularly wear a sleek braid or bun, I would also recommend using a deep cleansing shampoo every three hair washes – this helps to remove styling residue from the scalp and give it an intensive cleansing.
I hope these tips for achieving a sleek look have helped you. Feel free to let me know if you have any further comments or questions!
