Blemished skin is an annoying skin problem often accompanied by a lot of insecurity, yet so many people are affected, and probably everyone has experienced blemishes at some point. Here, I'll show you what helps with blemished skin and give you researched tips, as well as my personal advice from my own experience, that truly make a difference!
What Is Blemished Skin?
Blemished skin describes a skin condition with pimples, blackheads, and subcutaneous deposits. The complexion is not smooth and even, but characterized by inflammation and skin irregularities. Blemished skin can have various causes, such as hormonal changes, incorrect skincare, or stress. With the right care, specific routines, and simple tricks, you can bring your skin back into balance.
What Are Pimples?
Pimples occur when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, and it cannot drain properly due to clogged pores, leading to a quicker accumulation of bacteria. This, in turn, causes inflammation and the formation of a pimple. Sebum is the natural skin oil that keeps the skin supple and hydrated. However, with overproduction, sebum becomes noticeable as an oily shine on the face.
Difference Between Blemished Skin and Acne
The difference between blemished skin and acne lies in how severe and frequent blemishes occur. Blemished skin includes harmless, occasional pimples and blackheads, while acne involves persistent and often painful pimples and inflammation. Furthermore, acne is a skin disease diagnosed by a dermatologist and usually requires treatment with prescription creams or medications – conventional skincare is often insufficient here.
Causes of Blemished Skin
Hormonal Changes
During puberty, most people struggle with blemishes – hormones run wild, and the body changes. But hormonal fluctuations can also cause blemished skin after stopping birth control pills, during pregnancy, or during menopause. Even if none of these phases apply, your hormones might be out of balance – but this can only be confirmed after medical evaluation.
Stress
The skin is the mirror to the soul – therefore, signs of stress or feeling unwell quickly show on the skin. Stress can not only promote hormonal imbalance (increased cortisol levels) but also negatively impact your health long-term – including your skin.
Diet
Diet can, but doesn't necessarily have to be, a cause of blemished skin. However, blemishes can also be a sign of intolerances, so if you have other symptoms, you should have it medically checked. For many people, their consumption of fats and sugar is also linked to their skin and can negatively affect it when consumed in higher amounts. The same applies to dairy products.
Incorrect Skincare
If your skin doesn't tolerate certain products, it can react with irritations or blemishes. At the same time, blemishes can also be a sign of over-care (i.e., too much in too short a time) or a damaged skin barrier due to overly strong formulas.
However, a damaged skin barrier differs from blemished skin, or both can coexist. If you want to learn more about the skin barrier, feel free to read my blog post on strengthening the skin barrier.
External Influences
But external influences can also affect your skin and cause blemishes – such as too many bacteria (which is why regular facial cleansing is an absolute must!), but also too much UV radiation from sun exposure or even seasonal changes.
What Really Helps With Blemish-Prone Skin?
- Regular facial cleansing: Since blemished skin is associated with excessive sebum and bacteria, it's super important to regularly free your skin from them. However, always use mild products so as not to dry out your skin. Because the skin often reacts to this with even stronger sebum production to counteract drying out. Especially if you wear makeup during the day, you should thoroughly remove your makeup in the evening and free your skin from it.
- Suitable active ingredients: With regular peels and treatments containing effective active ingredients, you can effectively reduce blemishes. At the same time, some ingredients can help regulate sebum production and thus bring your skin back into balance, which sustainably prevents new blemishes.
- Diet: Diet can, but doesn't have to be, a cause of blemished skin – a balanced and varied diet can still positively influence your skin and your general health. Especially drinking enough (approx. 2-3 liters per day) helps to keep the water balance of your body and skin in equilibrium.
- Lifestyle: Through your lifestyle, you can also do something good for your skin and prevent blemishes. Nicotine and alcohol are not only poison for your body but also for your skin – ideally, you should largely avoid both.

Immediate Help for Pimples
Oh no, an important event is coming up and a pimple is making itself known? No problem, with these simple SOS tips you'll get rid of a pimple faster, and often one application overnight is enough to make it visibly shrink!
Maggie's Tip: My favorite immediate help for acute pimples are pimple patches. They are applied like small stickers to the pimples and are soaked with important active ingredients that can unleash their full power over several hours or overnight. At the same time, no new bacteria can get to the pimple, and it also prevents you from touching or squeezing it!

Ingredients that Can Help with Blemish-Prone Skin
Salicylic Acid (BHA)
Salicylic acid (BHA) is an oil-soluble acid that is particularly effective for oily and blemish-prone skin. The acid penetrates deep into the pores, removes dead skin cells, and helps reduce inflammation. At the same time, it prevents the formation of new blemishes.
Clay
Clay has sebum-regulating and antibacterial effects. It also combats inflammation and has a mattifying effect.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Niacinamide can help refine the skin's texture, soothe irritations and redness, and reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.

Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties, fights inflammation, and can balance sebum production.
Zinc
Zinc (usually zinc oxide) is an ideal choice for blemished skin due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. At the same time, it can regulate sebum production and promote wound healing.
Retinol/Retinal (Vitamin A)
Retinoids, i.e., retinol and retinal, can refine the skin's appearance and, above all, improve the look of post-pimple marks. They also regulate sebum and stimulate the production of new skin cells.
The Best Skincare Routine for Blemished Skin
Cleansing
For cleansing, you have two options: The base should always be a mild formula that does not further irritate your skin. Alternatively, you can opt for a cleanser that already contains anti-blemish active ingredients like BHA or clay to combat impurities. However, you should observe your skin here – in some cases, this can be too strong or drying for the skin.
Maggie's Tip: If a cleanser is too strong for you, you can also use it only a few days a week and alternate it with a mild cleanser.

Double cleansing is also an ideal way to effectively remove all bacteria, dirt, and sebum from blemished skin. Especially if you like to wear makeup, I can only recommend double cleansing to truly free your skin from all products.

Toner
Toner or facial tonic refreshes your skin, provides moisture, and can contain valuable active ingredients that benefit blemished skin. Depending on how you have structured your skincare routine, you have a choice of different formulas here.
But beware, if you already use peels, serums, and creams with highly concentrated active ingredients, a mild, moisturizing toner is the better choice. On days when you don't use a strong peel, you can then opt for an effective toner.

Peelings & Active Ingredients
Peelings and active ingredients in serums and emulsions can most effectively reduce blemishes. Here you can use the power of active ingredients such as BHA or retinoids to improve your complexion. However, note that your skin also needs to get used to the strong effect, and you shouldn't try too many active ingredients at once.
A highly concentrated peeling or retinol emulsion should initially be used once a week, depending on the product's instructions for use and tolerability, you can then slowly increase the frequency to a maximum of once daily. Note that you should use peels and retinoids separately from each other and never on the same evening.

Moisturizer
A good amount of moisture is very important for every skin type to replenish the skin's natural moisture reserves. Especially if you use products with active ingredients, your skin can dry out faster – therefore, intensive moisturizing care is all the more important here.

Sun Protection
Sun protection should be a part of every skincare routine – regardless of age and skin type. UV radiation can not only lead to sunburn but also to lasting skin damage and can promote blemished skin. Make sure to apply SPF every day – no matter the season or weather. Choose a texture that suits your skin and feels good.

Home Remedies for Blemished Skin – Useful or Myth?
- Tea tree oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Apply it selectively to blemishes with a cotton swab. Only the smell takes some getting used to.
- Healing clay binds excess sebum and has a mattifying effect. You can get healing clay as a ready-made paste or as a powder in pharmacies or drugstores – simply mix the powder with a little water to form a cream, which you apply as a mask to your face. Let it dry and then rinse thoroughly.
- Honey has soothing and antibacterial properties that are very helpful for blemishes. Apply honey thinly to specific spots or as a mask, which you then wash off after 15 minutes.
- Chamomile has a soothing effect and can be used as a steam bath. To do this, put a few chamomile tea bags or Kamillan in a large bowl and pour hot water over them. Then hold your face over the bowl for 10-15 minutes. It also wonderfully clears your nose and sinuses!
- Stay away from toothpaste and lemon juice: In many beauty forums and blogs, the tip that toothpaste or lemon juice can help with pimples is still often mentioned. But they dry out and irritate your skin too much – so it's better to use other home remedies or active ingredients.
Treating Blemished Skin According to Skin Type
There are four skin types, but blemished skin is not one of them! The four skin types are dry, normal, oily, and combination skin. Sensitive skin is also not a skin type, but a temporary skin condition.
Blemished skin can occur with any skin type, but oily and combination skin types are more prone to pimples and blackheads because their skin produces more sebum. It is therefore important that you still pay attention to your individual skin concerns and, for example, continue to provide your dry skin with plenty of moisture.

Tips for Blemished Skin
- Do not squeeze pimples, as this can lead to long-lasting post-pimple marks and scars.
- Don't introduce too many new products into your skincare routine at once; instead, incorporate them one by one.
- Peelings can have a great effect – however, choose a chemical peel. Mechanical peels can injure your skin and spread bacteria.
- Change pillowcases and towels regularly to prevent bacterial growth. Antibacterial pillowcases are also a great alternative to protect the skin.
- Avoid prolonged sunbathing to prevent new pimples.
- A balanced diet with little sugar and saturated fatty acids can benefit your skin and lead to fewer blemishes in the long term.
- Avoid nicotine and alcohol – both are poison for your body and skin.
- Give your skin time – you can expect results after four to eight weeks if you use products consistently.

When Should You See a Dermatologist?
You should see a dermatologist if your skin does not sustainably improve with an adjusted skincare routine over several months. Also, if pimples turn into painful pustules and deep nodules or if scars form.
Especially for adult acne, it is worthwhile to consult a doctor, as there is usually a hormonal cause.
I hope you enjoyed this blog post and, above all, found it helpful. I can certainly empathize with struggling with blemished skin – please let me know if you have any further questions or comments.
