A gentle tan often makes us look fresh and healthy. But caution is advised, as the sun's UV rays can also be harmful. Therefore, it's important to understand which UV index is ideal for a healthy tan and when you should be cautious. Learn everything you need to know about tanning here!
What is the UV index?
The UV index is an internationally standardized measure of the intensity of ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation) expected at ground level that day. It ranges from 0 (low) to extremely high values. The UV index can vary depending on the time of day, season, cloud cover, and, of course, location.
Many weather apps display the current UV index so you can check it at any time.

Gradations of the UV index
But what do the values displayed in the UV index mean?
- 0-2: No to low UV exposure. No protective measures required.
- 3-5: Moderate UV exposure. Protective measures required.
- 6-7: High UV exposure. Protective measures absolutely necessary. Avoid midday sun.
- 8-10: Very high UV exposure. Protective measures absolutely necessary. Keep outdoor exposure to a minimum.
- 11+: Extreme UV exposure. Protective measures absolutely necessary. Avoid outdoor exposure if possible.
The higher the UV index, the faster unprotected skin can be damaged and the greater the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.
Note: Children's skin is particularly sensitive to intense UV radiation. Their protective mechanisms are not yet fully developed, which is why they are at higher risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Therefore, always make sure your little ones use a particularly high SPF, ideally 30 or 50+, and avoid the midday sun completely.

At what UV index do you get a tan?
The good news: Your skin can develop a sun-kissed complexion at any UV index. The key is the dose and the time you spend in the sun.
But be careful: If the UV index is above 3, you should definitely use sunscreen! Why? Because you want to protect your skin from painful sunburn and long-term damage. After all, a slow, protected tan is the healthier and more sustainable option.
An important tip: Even when the sun is hidden behind clouds, the UV index is often still relevant! This is especially true in spring, when the sun may not yet seem as warm, but in Europe it is particularly close to Earth. So don't let cloudy skies lull you into a false sense of security!
Whether and when you tan also depends on your individual skin type and color. You can easily determine your exact skin type based on your physical characteristics:
Celtic type:
- Very light skin, often with freckles
- Red to reddish-blonde hair
- The self-protection time is approximately 10 minutes
- The skin does not tan
- Sun protection factor 50+ is recommended
Nordic type:
- Light skin, often with freckles
- Blonde to brown hair
- The self-protection time is approximately 20 minutes
- The skin tans barely to moderately
- Sun protection factor 30 to 50+ is recommended
Mixed type:
- Light to light brown skin, freckles are rare
- Dark blonde to brown hair
- Self-protection time is approximately 30 minutes
- The skin tans well
- Sun protection factor 30 to 50+ is recommended
Mediterranean type:
- Light brown, olive skin, without freckles
- Dark brown hair
- Self-protection time is approximately 50 minutes
- Skin tans quickly and deeply
- Sun protection factor 30 is recommended
Dark type:
- Dark brown skin
- Dark brown to black hair
- Self-protection time is approximately 60 minutes
- Existing tan does not increase
- Sun protection factor 20 is recommended
Black type:
- Dark brown to black skin
- Black hair
- Self-protection time is approximately 60 to 90 minutes
- Existing tan does not increase
- Sun protection factor 10 to 15 is recommended

Tips for quick tanning
- Take it easy: Give your skin time to adjust to the sun. Start with short sunbaths of 10-15 minutes and gradually increase the duration. A marathon in the sun on the first nice day usually backfires!
- The night-before beauty ritual: Pamper your skin with a gentle exfoliation the night before sun exposure. This will remove dead skin cells and ensure an even tan that looks simply stunning.
- Sun protection is key: Whether you're actively tanning or just taking a stroll, sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is an absolute must! This will protect your skin from unwanted surprises like sunburn and premature aging.
- Help with tanning accelerators: Special lotions and oils can boost your skin's melanin production and help you achieve a sun-kissed complexion faster.
