Dry hands, chapped lips and irritated skin - winter brings with it lower temperatures and unpleasant skin conditions. Find out with our tips and valuable recommendations what you should pay attention to in winter skincare and how you can do something good for your skin at this time of year.
Winter: Pure stress for the skin
The cold in the winter months, but also the dry heating air indoors, puts a strain on the skin. They cause more dryness and also increase the sensitivity of the skin. The skin barrier, i.e. the protective fatty film of the skin, is stressed and is significantly weakened in winter.
With our tips you will learn how you can easily care for your skin in winter!
Helpful skincare tips for winter
1) Mild face cleansing
In winter, the skin's protective barrier is stressed by the temperature differences between outside and inside and the skin is more easily irritated. When cleaning, you should be particularly careful not to irritate or dry out the skin even more.
Use a moisturizing cleansing oil or gentle formulations that support the skin barrier. When it comes to make-up and sun protection, a combination (double cleansing) is the perfect choice to cleanse your face gently yet effectively.
2) Pay attention to the water temperature
Even if a hot shower or bath sounds so tempting in winter, your skin will thank you if the water is not quite so hot. Make sure that the water is pleasantly warm and not hot when showering or bathing and when washing your face. Otherwise you will only dry out your skin a lot.
Pro tip: Use moisturizing shower gels or bath oils to give your skin extra moisture.

3) Lots of moisture
Since the skin tends to lose more moisture and become dry in winter, you should counteract this with particularly moisturizing products.
Moisturize your skin regularly - ideally twice a day for your face at the end of your skincare routine and ideally after every shower for your body. Match your care to your skin type - a face cream doesn't have to be greasy to give your skin plenty of moisture. Formulas that are too greasy can ultimately lead to blemishes on some skin types.
Maggie's tip: Happier Barrier is my absolute heartfelt recommendation! The cream is super nourishing and hydrating and at the same time feels very light and pleasant on the skin. A great choice for every skin type!

4) Intensive care for the night
You can give your winter skin a particularly intensive moisture boost overnight so that it can withstand the low temperatures and stresses during the day. Don't forget to take care of your lips and hands, too.
The skin on your lips is around 70% thinner and tends to crack and become very dry in winter. Make sure you moisturize your lips with lip balm and avoid moistening them with your tongue. Saliva will only dry out the sensitive skin even more and irritate your lips.
Maggie's tip: Nourish your lips overnight with Laneige's luxurious Lip Sleeping Mask EX. The lip mask is absolutely worth the hype and is my favorite step in my evening skincare routine!

Just like your lips, your hands are particularly affected by the different temperatures. Therefore, apply cream regularly to avoid dry skin and painful cracks caused by dryness.
Tip for an intensive nighttime treatment:
Apply your hand care product generously to your hands and then put on a pair of thin cotton gloves. This will allow the care product to be absorbed into the skin even better and you will wake up the next morning with silky soft hands!
5) Slowly change your skincare routine
As you've probably already noticed, proper skincare in winter isn't rocket science! You don't have to completely change your routine from one day to the next and replace all your products.
Start by taking a closer look at your cleanser and adjusting it if necessary. As a second step, you can adjust your night cream and swap it for a product that provides your skin with more moisture.
6) Don't forget sun protection
Even in winter you should definitely use sun protection every day, because even though we see the sun less in winter, the UV rays are still just as strong.
In addition, the sun's rays are reflected by snow and ice, thus enhancing their effect.
