With the changing of the seasons, the trees shed their leaves, and you suddenly notice that your hair is falling out too. Hair loss in fall is a common problem, and you're definitely not alone. Here you'll learn more about possible causes and get some helpful tips from me!
Causes of Hair Loss in Fall
Autumnal hair loss doesn't actually come from nowhere; it's very much related to the time of year. Many hairs grow anew in the summer, while in fall they finally enter the telogen phase, also known as the resting phase, so many of the newly grown hairs fall out again.
But don't worry: This process is part of the normal hair growth cycle and occurs to some extent in everyone. Furthermore, all hairs will grow back during the course of the cycle.
You can therefore interpret this hair loss in fall as a kind of shedding of fur – this is also the assumption of many scientists that seasonal hair loss can be seen as a remnant of our evolutionary shedding of fur.
However, reduced sunlight in fall and winter, and consequently reduced vitamin D intake, can also be a reason for hair loss in fall. Similarly, changes in our hormonal balance can play a role: less daylight in autumn leads to increased melatonin production, which also slows down growth processes in the body.
Possible causes of hair loss in fall – a quick overview:
- Natural process during the transition from summer to fall – the hair enters the resting phase and some falls out.
- Remnant of our evolutionary shedding
- Reduced absorption of vitamin D
- Increased melatonin production in fall
Hair loss in fall is therefore completely normal – as long as it stays within certain limits. We typically lose up to 200 hairs per day in fall (compared to 50 to 100 at other times of the year). Our fall "shedding" should last a maximum of six to eight weeks.
If your hair loss differs from this, it could have other causes that you should investigate or have examined more closely. But you're by no means alone: around 85% of all men and 33% of all women experience hair loss at some point in their lives.

Of course, there are also a few tips and tricks on how to do something good for your hair and scalp, especially right now. This list will keep you on top of the game:
1) Vitamins and Nutrients are Essential
Your appearance reflects what you put into your body. A balanced diet with all the essential vitamins and nutrients is therefore crucial. For healthy hair, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, biotin, selenium, and vitamin B5 are particularly important.
But you should also make sure you're getting enough protein – it's not just the most important building block for muscle growth, but also an essential component of healthy hair. The same applies to antioxidants: they help to ward off harmful substances from within.
But which foods should you focus on to ensure your vitamin and nutrient needs are well met?
- Iron: found primarily in meat and sausage (liver has the highest iron content), cashew nuts, pistachios, chanterelle mushrooms, rolled oats, spinach
- Omega 3 fatty acids: fish, various oils e.g. flaxseed oil, walnut oil, rapeseed oil, hemp oil, walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, Brussels sprouts, spinach, green beans, avocado
- Zinc: Meat (pork, beef, poultry), fish, dairy products (yogurt, milk, cheese), eggs, legumes, oatmeal, almonds, cashews, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds)
- Biotin: Eggs, oatmeal, legumes, nuts, mushrooms, avocado, soybeans
- Selenium: meat, fish, nuts, legumes, asparagus, mushrooms, rice, oatmeal, tofu, coconut
- Vitamin B5: Meat and fish (especially liver, trout, salmon and herring), legumes, nuts (peanuts and almonds), oatmeal and whole grain products, cheeses such as Gouda and Camembert, avocado, banana, watermelon, dates
- Proteins: meat, tofu, certain cheeses such as feta, cottage cheese, legumes
- Antioxidants: blueberries, tomatoes, papaya, legumes
