Foundation is considered one of the most important steps in your make-up routine. After all, it can conceal small imperfections and uneven skin and give you a flawless complexion.
But how do you find the perfect foundation for your skin type, your routine and, above all, your skin tone? In this guide you will find the answers to all your questions, useful tips and foundation recommendations for stunning results!
What is meant by foundation?
Foundation literally means the base and is one of the first steps in your make-up routine.
5 Forms of Foundation
You will also find different shapes and textures of foundation so that you can adapt it perfectly to your skin type:
- liquid foundation
- Powder
- Cream
- Mousse
- Stick
Liquid textures are considered to be the most popular form. However, you can of course choose the form that you find most suitable for your skin and that you like to use the most. The best thing to do is to try out a few different products and find your favorite one!
Tip: Pay attention to layering the different products. Powder should not be followed by another liquid product such as a liquid blush. Otherwise unsightly spots can appear and it is much more difficult to work the product into the skin. Powder products should always be applied after liquid and cream textures.
Water-based vs. silicone-based
A look at the ingredients will tell you whether your foundation is water- or silicone-based. This is especially important if you combine different products and want to prevent them from rolling off.
Your day cream or primer and your foundation should have the same base. But your desired finish is also crucial for choosing the right foundation for you.
Advantages of a water base
- Light to medium coverage
- Weightless texture
- Moisturizes
- Glowy, non-mask-like finish
- Allows the skin to breathe
- Prevents irritation and does not clog pores
- Ideal for summer
- Ideal for dry and dehydrated skin
How to recognize a water base:
In the INCI list, you can recognize the water base by the very first ingredient, Aqua (water). This is usually followed by ingredients such as ethylhexyl palmitate or glycerin. Silicones with the endings -cone and -xane can also be included, but tend to be further down the list.

Find the right color
For a beautiful finish, it is an absolute must to match your skin color as closely as possible. After all, your face should not be too dark or too pale compared to the rest of your body.
However, even if you can judge whether you are a very light, medium or dark type, it is essential to consider the skin undertone. After all, there are rosy and warm to cool and olive undertones and you should also know these about yourself. your foundation applies perfectly and it doesn't look like a mask.
How to find out your skin undertone:
- Take a closer look at your wrists and the insides of your arms in daylight.
- Pay attention to the tone of your veins under your skin: Cool undertone: Your veins appear more violet and your skin tone is more pink. Neutral undertone: Your veins appear more bluish. Warm undertone: Your veins appear green and your skin tone is more golden.
- Cool skin tones should choose a foundation with a cool undertone and warm skin types should choose one with a warm undertone. Neutral skin tones can use both options and test what suits them best.
You can often tell what undertone the product has by looking at the color names:
- CN stands for Cool Neutral (cool undertone)
- WN stands for Warm Neutral (warm undertone)
The color name often also contains a reference to the undertone, such as the color name Warm Vanilla in the True Skin Hydrating Foundation by Catrice.
However, you cannot rely on being able to choose the shade “vanilla” for every product. After all, the brands are free to name the shades and there is no cross-brand system here.
By the way: We posted a helpful reel on Instagram with a real insider tip! This makes it easy to find your perfect match when shopping online:
7 tips for applying foundation correctly
- Skin Care first: Always prepare your skin well for makeup and, above all, provide it with plenty of moisture. This will prevent the products from settling undesirably and the finish from looking cakey.
- Don't forget your neck: Blend the foundation towards your neck and slightly towards your ears to avoid unwanted edges.
- Multiple colors: It doesn't hurt to have different shades for summer and winter. When your skin gets browner, it's time for a new shade! In the transitional seasons, you can also mix two colors together. (The same goes for all self-tanning girls - adjust your foundation accordingly!)
- Blend in well: In our experience, liquid textures blend particularly well with a makeup sponge. They provide a very natural result. If you absolutely have to use a brush, it's best to choose one that is tightly bound and oval at the top.
- Washing: You should wash brushes and sponges regularly – ideally once a week to remove dirt and bacteria.
- Daylight: Always test new products in daylight to judge whether they match your skin tone. Daylight or very bright artificial light is also ideal for your make-up routine.
We hope our Foundation Finder Guide has helped you and you were able to find the right products for you!
