Peptides are taking the beauty world by storm and promise youthful skin and fewer wrinkles. But what exactly are peptides and do they really do what they promise? Here you can find out everything you need to know about peptides in skin care, including how they work, how to use them and recommended products.
What are peptides?
Peptides occur naturally in the human body and are amino acids strung together. They are responsible for the formation of other substances in the body, such as collagen and elastin , both of which are important components of the skin.
Peptides in cosmetics are synthetic replicas of our body’s own peptides.
Benefits of peptides in skin care
Peptides are considered a miracle cure for anti-aging – why? Find out here:
- stimulate the formation of collagen and other components of the skin structure
- reduce wrinkles and lines
- reduce hyperpigmentation
- have an antioxidant effect
In general, there are no side effects when using skin care products containing peptides. They are very well tolerated and can be used by all skin types.
Who are peptides suitable for?
Because of their great anti-aging effect on the skin, peptides can be used to prevent skin aging or to counteract the first signs. You can use peptides if you have already noticed fine lines or if you need to prevent them from forming.
If you want to start anti-aging early, the age of 25 is a good time.
Thanks to their high tolerability, every skin type can use peptides.
Types of peptides and how to recognize them
A distinction is made between four different types of peptides: signal peptides, transport peptides, neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides and enzyme-inhibiting peptides.
The types differ slightly in their effects. You can also find their names in the ingredient list here:
Signal peptides in skin care
- You can find it as: Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide-7, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Dipeptide-5, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, Tripeptide-29, Acetyl Tertrapeptide-2, Pentapeptide-18, Hexapeptide-9, Myristoyl Hexapeptide-16, Myristoyl Nonapeptide e-3, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17
- Particularly responsible for wound healing and the formation of collagen, firming the skin and increasing elasticity
Transport peptides
- Acetyl Hexapeptide-37, Copper Tripeptide-1, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3
- They are also known as “copper peptides” because they are important for stabilizing copper. Copper plays a major role in the formation of collagen
Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides
- Acetylhexapeptide-3, Acetylhexapeptide-8, Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate
- Reduce expression lines such as crow’s feet and nasolabial folds
- The effect is said to be similar to Botox, as it limits facial expressions and thus prevents expression lines for a more even skin tone
Enzyme-inhibiting peptides
- Acetylarginyltryptophyl Diphenylglycine, Hexanoyl Dipeptide-3 Norleucine Acetate, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7
- Reduce the breakdown of collagen and elastin
- The result is firm and elastic skin

Application of peptides
As a rule, you can use the peptide serum in the morning and evening . However, always pay attention to the exact instructions on your product.
Incorporate peptides into your routine
In fact, it does not depend on the active ingredient but on the texture of your product as to when exactly you should use it in your routine.
After cleansing, layer the products you apply so that they go from watery to rich textures on the skin. So first go very watery serums or toners and then nourishing serums, oils and creams.
Tip: Sun protection should not be missing from any morning routine! The sun is the skin's number one enemy and causes the skin to age faster.
Peptides and retinol
Since peptides are very well tolerated, you can safely use them together with retinol or retinal. This actually creates a particularly effective anti-aging combination.
Maggie's Tip: I especially like using Geek & Gorgeous' Power Peptides Serum with the matching retinal serum, Geek & Gorgeous' A-Game 5. With retinal, you just have to be careful and slowly increase the frequency of application from a few times a week.
Already convinced? We hope you love peptides as much as we do! Let us know if you have any questions about skin care!
