With rouge or blush you can give your face a great burst of color and make your complexion appear more radiant. If you are still unsure about how to use rouge, then this guide is perfect for you. Here you will find all the tips on applying rouge, choosing the ideal color and much more.
Choosing the right blusher colour
Rouge makes you look more awake and refreshed. Especially if you use a very opaque foundation, blush is a great way to add some color back to your face.
A harmonious, fresh look is best achieved when you choose a blush color that harmonizes particularly well with your skin tone:
- Light complexion: pink and muted pink tones, cool coral
- Light brown complexion: strong pink, berry tones, brownish nuances
- Dark complexion: apricot, terracotta, brick red
However, these are just tips that you don't have to stick to. For example, you can also complete a look beautifully by matching your blush to your eye shadow and lipstick. Ultimately, you should choose a blush color that you like.
Cream, powder & co.: The ideal blush texture for your skin type
You can find blush in different variations. The classics are powder and cream textures, but in recent years highly pigmented liquid textures and blush sticks have become increasingly popular.
So what is the ideal blush texture for you and your skin?
Powder products are always perfect if you want a matte effect. Oily and combination skin in particular can benefit from this finish, as it visually balances out shine in an instant.
Creamy, liquid and blush sticks are moisturizing and therefore particularly suitable for dry skin types . At the same time, their finish is more glossy and radiant.
So you can choose the blush texture that suits you based solely on the finish you want.

Apply blush correctly according to your look
Where exactly do you apply blush? Here we show you the best tips to create great results and different looks.
Facelift
As the name suggests, this will give your face a visual lift. To do this, place the blusher slightly above the cheekbones and blend it upwards towards the temples.
Lift & Define
With this blush look, you not only lift your face, but also visually highlight your cheekbones. Your face appears more defined and a little more angular.
Sunkissed
Do you love the fresh, sun-kissed holiday look? Sunburn can look cute, but create it with blusher instead of putting your skin at risk. Here you place the blusher very gently on the nose and blend it towards the cheeks.
Apple cheeks
The apple cheeks are considered the classic placement for blusher. Smile slightly when applying and apply the blusher lightly on the upper cheeks.
Cheekbone
To really highlight your cheekbones, you can also apply blush slightly underneath them. Make sure to blend the blush upwards to give them a slight lift.
Overblushing
Do you love blusher and can't get enough of it? Then the overblushing look is the perfect choice for you! Here, more is more: you apply the blusher to your cheekbones and cheeks and blend it upwards to your temples. You can blend the blusher towards your eyelids and use it as a replacement for your eyeshadow. Or you can blend it with an eyeshadow shade that matches your blusher.
Apply blush correctly according to face shape
We're not a fan of telling you that you can only use one technique for blushing for every face shape. We'd therefore recommend the methods above. You should choose the technique depending on the look you want to create.
However, there are certain ways to place blush to particularly highlight your face shape:
- Oval face: Place your blush on the center of your cheeks and blend it outward toward your cheekbones.
- Round face: Apply your blusher below the cheekbones, diagonally towards the corners of your mouth. Blend it upwards towards your ears.
- Square face: Create a softer effect by applying blush in an arc around the outer eye area, working from the cheekbones up to the temples.
- Narrow or elongated face: Place the blush on the tip of your cheekbones and blend it horizontally outwards.
- Heart-shaped face: Apply the blush below the cheekbones and blend it diagonally upwards.
Applying blush: instructions for every texture
But how exactly do you apply the blusher? Here you will find instructions for each texture, because not all blushers are the same:
Apply powder blush correctly
- Use a fluffy powder brush that is not too big. A slanted brush shape is also ideal.
- Use the brush to pick up some of your powder blush. Gently tap off any excess pigment.
- Use the brush to dab the product onto the desired areas.
- You can blend the blusher further with very light, sweeping movements. Make sure that the bristles of the brush only lightly touch the skin so that you don't smudge any products you've used before and create spots.
- If you wish, you can apply more product if you want a more intense color finish.
Apply cream blush correctly
- For creamy blushes, you can use a brush, your finger or a make-up sponge. The brush, however, should be firmly bound and angled.
- Apply the blush gently using dabbing, not wiping, movements.
- By dabbing more often, you blend the product and ensure a particularly soft finish.
How to apply liquid blush correctly
- Either put a little product on the back of your hand and then apply it to your face with a brush. Or use the applicator to apply the product directly to the desired area. But be careful: Liquid blushes are very highly pigmented, so you usually only need a tiny dab of the product.
- Blend quickly using a brush, your finger or a makeup sponge in dabbing motions. Work really quickly here, because liquid blusher dries very quickly and then can no longer be blended.
Make-up routine: When do you apply blusher?
When exactly you apply blush during your make-up routine depends on the texture.
- Powder blush: You should always apply powder products last and after you have used cream textures, for example after contouring with a cream product. This way you avoid a patchy result.
- Liquid and cream blush: Creamy textures can be wonderfully incorporated into the foundation to ensure a particularly natural result. You should therefore only use setting powder, powder bronzer and powdery contour products afterwards.
- Be careful with blush sticks: If you want to apply the stick directly to the skin, you should not use any other products underneath. Otherwise, you may end up "pulling" the foundation away. Alternatively, you can use a blush brush to pick up some product and then apply it over the foundation and before powdery products. This ensures a particularly even and beautifully fresh complexion.
Do you already know the different sequences for your make-up routine?
- Underpainting: Here you apply blusher and contour under the foundation. Creamy and liquid textures are suitable for this.
- Overpainting: This describes painting over the foundation. For a particularly even result, it is best to use powdery products.
- “Double Painting”: This method ensures particularly long-lasting results and combines the under- and overpainting techniques. First, you apply liquid or cream blush and your contour products under the foundation and then fix the finish with powder products.
