We all want to keep our skin even and smooth for as long as possible. But how can you prevent wrinkles and counteract their formation? In this guide you will find helpful anti-aging tips and cool tools for beautiful, youthful skin!
Why do wrinkles form at all?
As we age, our skin's cell renewal slows down. The production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, two important components for the skin's elasticity and firmness, decreases.
Factors that cause wrinkles
- Facial expressions: Our daily facial movements (laughing, crying, frowning when thinking, etc.) create what are known as facial expression lines. These include frown lines (between the eyebrows), thinking lines (horizontal lines on the forehead) and crow's feet (lines at the outer corner of the eye).
- Gravity: Due to the age-related loss of elasticity, gravity acts on the skin and new wrinkles can appear, for example on the chin, neck and décolleté.
- UV radiation: The sun is our skin's greatest enemy. UV radiation causes the skin to age faster and promotes the formation of wrinkles and age spots.
- Lifestyle: Smoking, alcohol, stress and lack of sleep damage the skin and encourage the formation of wrinkles. Your sleeping position can also affect the formation of wrinkles - sleeping on your side or stomach encourages the formation of wrinkles on the face, décolleté and neck.
Helpful tips to prevent wrinkles
Pay attention to your lifestyle
In order to counteract skin aging or at least slow it down, it is particularly important to adapt lifestyle factors accordingly.
This means avoiding alcohol, nicotine and other drugs and getting enough sleep, at least seven hours a night.
You can also do something good for your skin from the inside – drinking plenty of water is especially important to moisturize your skin from the inside.
The right vitamins and nutrients are not only incredibly important for your health, but also for your skin! A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is therefore essential. If you want to further support the health of your skin, you can also take suitable nutritional supplements specifically for your skin.

Use a high sun protection
Protect your skin from one of its biggest enemies, UV rays. To do this, you should really use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor every day, which protects against UVA and UVB rays. There are now many great products that are not greasy or sticky, but feel very pleasant on the skin.
Maggie's tip: I get on really well with the SPF50+ Face Lotion Fragrance Free sunscreen from the Australian brand Bondi Sands. The formula is very light and doesn't leave any white residue. Additionally, it can also be worn wonderfully under make-up.
You should also avoid extensive tanning sessions in the blazing sun or in a studio under artificial UV light. If you still want a beautiful, tanned complexion, you can use self-tanner.

Care, care, care
With the perfect skin care, you not only do something good for your skin, but you can also counteract the first signs of aging or prevent premature aging.
Great anti-aging ingredients in facial care
Retinol and Retinal
Retinol and retinal (vitamin A) stimulate collagen formation and thus counteract the first wrinkles. Vitamin A also ensures a more elastic and even skin texture.
You should slowly introduce anti-aging products with retinoids into your skin care routine. It's best to start with one or two times a week and gradually increase the frequency. It's best to use vitamin A products in the evening.
Tip for sensitive skin: If you tend to have sensitive skin, you should be a little more cautious with retinoids. The sandwich method is perfect here - layer your products as following: moisturizer, retinol or retinal, moisturizer.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
The well-known vitamin protects against oxidative stress, which is also responsible for skin aging. The acid also has lightening properties and thus reduces pigment spots.
Tip: It is best to use vitamin C products in the morning and enjoy beautiful, glowing skin all day long.
PHAS
Polyhydroxy acids stimulate collagen production and have a peeling effect. They can reduce the first wrinkles and also provide moisture.
AHA
Alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid, have a great anti-aging effect and can reduce the first signs of wrinkles.
Peptides
Peptides stimulate the formation of collagen and other important skin components. They ensure a firmer complexion, smooth wrinkles and improve the elasticity of the skin.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide counteracts the first signs of skin aging, such as pigment spots and the first wrinkles. It also strengthens the skin barrier, making the skin less vulnerable to harmful environmental influences.
Hyaluronic acid
Not every wrinkle is a direct sign of aging. Often these are simply dry wrinkles because the skin is dehydrated or too dry. A moisturizing facial care product with, for example, the ultimate moisture booster, hyaluronic acid, is therefore ideal.
Tip: Cleanse your skin regularly to remove dirt, make-up and excess sebum. This will allow future active ingredients to be absorbed more effectively by the skin.

Use special anti-aging tools
You can use special face tools to prevent wrinkles on your face. Not only are they effective, but they can also have a wonderfully relaxing effect and give your skin care routine a new feeling of luxury.
Gua Sha
Gua Shas have become known worldwide, especially through social media. The pink or green stones made of rose quartz or jade have their origins in traditional Chinese medicine.
The stones are usually palm-sized and heart-shaped or have a wavy edge. The heart-shaped arch or wavy edge is used to stroke the face, always upwards and outwards, to prevent wrinkles and work against gravity. At the same time, the muscles are relaxed.
Dermaroller
Caution is advised when using dermarollers, as these handy rollers are fitted with fine needles. Rollers with longer needles are used for professional needling in beauty salons. Dermarollers with shorter needles can also be used at home.
The needles cause microscopic skin injuries that stimulate the skin's healing and renewal process. They are therefore a useful tool for counteracting the first wrinkles and acne scars. The complexion is visibly refined and smoothed.
Caution: You should never use a dermaroller on wounds on your face or active pimples. Otherwise, the bacteria will only be spread and larger wounds could develop.

Red light therapy
Infrared light is considered a proven remedy for joint pain, colds and inflammation. However, it is now also increasingly used in facial care and as an anti-aging tool.
The infrared light boosts blood circulation and has a detoxifying effect, flushing out dirt and other toxins. At the same time, the special red light is said to stimulate collagen production.

Preventing wrinkles: Medical interventions
Medical interventions are among the best-known methods for counteracting the aging process and fighting the first wrinkles. Here you will find a brief overview of the most common methods for preventing wrinkles.
Important: Please find out more about specific procedures and make sure you arrange consultations with specialists before you decide on a procedure. We are not medical professionals and cannot give you any recommendations. With this overview, we only want to help you get an overview.
Botulinum toxin (Botox)
Botox injections are probably the best-known anti-aging procedure. Botox is used to combat the formation of expression lines. It can smooth out existing wrinkles and also prevent new ones from forming.
This is because it paralyzes the facial muscles, meaning that the eyebrows, for example, can no longer move as much as before. The effect of Botox lasts for around four months. It is usually injected regularly to continuously counteract skin aging.
Injections
Whether with lactic acid, collagen, hyaluronic acid or your own fat: injections plump up the skin from the inside and thus counteract deep wrinkles. The effect usually lasts up to a year, as the body quickly breaks down the natural substances.
Laser treatments
Fine wrinkles on the face can also be treated with laser. The cells are destroyed with the laser light, which stimulates cell renewal. The result is smoother and more youthful-looking skin.
Facelift
A facelift is a surgical procedure that is used when wrinkles are already present and the skin is visibly looser. The facial skin is lifted and the skin is visibly smoothed. However, this can affect facial expressions and expressiveness.
