Niacinamide is one of the best-known ingredients in skin care. But what is behind it and how does niacinamide actually work? Find out useful information about the effects of niacinamide, tips on how to use it and browse through our product recommendations!
What is niacinamide?
Niacinamide is a vitamin and is best known as a form of vitamin B3 , but also as niacin, nicotinamide and nicotinic acid. Niacin is naturally found in fish such as anchovies, tuna, salmon and mackerel, but it is also found in meat, mushrooms, milk and eggs.
Niacinamide has become particularly well-known as an ingredient in skin care . And don't worry: your skin care is not based on fish or anything similar if it contains niacinamide. For your skin care, niacinamide is synthetically produced from acrolein and ammonia.
Benefits of Niacinamide
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is an effective ingredient that should have a place in every skincare routine . Here's why!
- Anti-aging effect: Vitamin B3 in skin care stimulates collagen production, making the skin appear plumper and more youthful.
- Niacinamide has a soothing effect and relieves redness and irritation.
- It strengthens the skin barrier and supports the formation of ceramides.
- Due to its positive effects on the skin barrier, niacinamide can be combined perfectly with active ingredients . It thus alleviates any possible skin reactions.
- Niacinamide has a sebum-regulating effect, so that the pores do not clog as quickly and the formation of pimples and blackheads is prevented.
- Vitamin B3 also has lightening properties , making it the perfect choice for treating hyperpigmentation, such as scars and pigment spots.
- Niacinamide is very mild and very well tolerated. It is suitable for all skin types and also for pregnant women.
- Niacinamide can be found in over-the-counter products , but is also available in higher concentrations in prescription creams.
Side effects rarely occur when using niacinamide. Burning, itching, redness and flaky dryness occur in very rare cases. In a few cases, an initial worsening occurs and this usually only occurs with high, prescription concentrations.
Niacinamide can develop its full, positive effects at concentrations of just two to five percent . In some products you can even find nicotinic acid concentrations of up to 10%.
Who is Niacinamide suitable for?
Niacinamide is suitable for all skin types, but especially if you:
- have oily and blemish-prone skin
- Would like to lighten pigment spots
- your skin barrier is attacked
- you have sensitive skin and it reacts strongly to active ingredients such as retinol
- your skin is generally prone to redness and irritation
- you want a small anti-aging effect
- you would like to have a more radiant complexion

Use of Niacinamide
Normally, you can use niacinamide every day, both in the morning and in the evening. However, please note the instructions for use for each product.
Add Niacinamide into your routine
Where in your skincare routine do you use niacinamide? It doesn't depend on the active ingredients, but on the textures of your products .
The more watery the texture, the sooner you should use the product. After cleansing, you should first use very liquid products such as toner, then gels and finally rich serums and creams.
What should not be mixed with niacinamide?
In fact, you can safely combine and mix niacinamide (vitamin B3) with all active ingredients:
- Vitamin C: Vitamin C has great anti-aging effects and protects against free radicals, among other things. At the same time, like niacinamide, it has brightening properties. So they are a perfect duo to tackle pigment spots and other skin problems.
- Retinol / Retinal: Niacinamide has soothing properties and, as a combination, can be particularly beneficial for sensitive skin.
- Hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid is an absolute must-have in every routine and you shouldn't have to do without it because of niacinamide! Hyaluronic acid is very mild and moisturizing and can be used wonderfully with niacinamide.
When will I see first results from using niacinamide?
