LED light therapy has been considered an effective beauty treatment for years. In addition to light treatments in studios, there are now also practical LED devices for use at home. But how effective is the new beauty trend really and what effects does LED light therapy have on the skin? Here you can find out about the advantages of the innovative beauty gadgets, their possible dangers and other tips!
What is LED light therapy?
In addition to medically prescribed light therapy using UV light to treat skin diseases such as neurodermatitis or psoriasis, irradiation with LEDs has been available for a few years now.
LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode” and its use as a skincare tool is considered painless and non-invasive. Unlike medical treatments, no UV radiation is used here.
However, depending on the device, the small lamps emit light in different colors. The different wavelengths of light penetrate deep into the skin layers and can have different effects on your skin depending on the color.
Benefits of LED light therapy
The benefits of LED therapy vary slightly depending on the color of the light.
Red LED light is said to have a great anti-aging effect on the skin. The red light waves with a length of 550 to 660 nanometers are proven to stimulate the skin's collagen production and thus reduce wrinkles. At the same time, the skin is said to appear visibly more elastic and plumper afterwards.
Blue LED light, on the other hand, has a particularly positive effect on acne-prone skin. The light in 400 to 450 nanometer long light waves is said to regulate sebum production and reduce inflammation. At the same time, it has an antibacterial effect and can even relieve psoriasis.
In fact, there are some who claim that the blue LED light not only has positive effects on the skin. The light is also said to be able to balance the hormone levels and also have positive effects on winter depression and sleep disorders.
Green LED rays have LED wavelengths of around 525 nanometers and have a calming effect, meaning they are proven to reduce redness and have a wound-healing effect. Hyperpigmentation is also said to be gradually reduced with the green light.

LED light therapy: the correct application
It is best to use LED masks one to three times a week to achieve long-term effects. Beforehand, you should clean your skin thoroughly and remove all product residues such as make-up and sunscreen.
Depending on the product and manufacturer, it may be beneficial to apply a serum or moisturizer beforehand. However, do not use active ingredients such as BHA, retinol or retinal before, as these can increase the skin's sensitivity to light!
When using the LED mask, you should follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly and only wear the mask for as long as stated. This is usually between 10 and 30 minutes.
Be sure to use the included protective eye masks. Some of the LED light from the devices is not suitable for the eyes. Unless, of course, they are special LED face masks for the eye area.
The masks are ideal for putting on while watching TV on the couch or reading a good book and simply relaxing. They are good for your skin and are a great upgrade for your me-time.
Concerns and dangers of LED light therapy
As a general rule, you should not use an LED mask during pregnancy. To be on the safe side, however, you should read the instructions for the device or check with your doctor.
You should also avoid using LED light therapy if you regularly take medication that increases the skin's sensitivity to light. However, it is best to ask a doctor about this.
