Hair oiling is one of the most popular hair care trends on social media platforms like TikTok & Co. Oiling the scalp and hair is said to have many effects on hair growth and scalp health. How does the method really work? You can find helpful tips and instructions for great results here!
Hair Oiling: What is it?
You probably know hair oil as a styling product that you apply to your hair before or after styling to make it smoother and shinier. Hair oiling, however, is more about the scalp.
Hair oiling is actually not a new beauty trend, but an old Ayurvedic tradition that is mainly practiced in India. The oil is massaged into the scalp and applied to the lengths and ends, left to work for several hours and then washed out with normal hair washing.
Benefits of the hair oiling trend
Hair oiling is particularly good for dry, irritated, flaky scalps. The oil moisturizes the skin, supplies it with important nutrients and is said to promote hair health. Massaging the scalp with the oil is also said to stimulate blood circulation and promote hair growth at the same time.
In addition, irritations are supposed to be alleviated and the oil has a particularly balancing effect on the scalp. This actually works even for oily scalps! What's more, the hair is supposed to look shinier and less frizzy afterwards.
Hair Oiling: The perfect application
Before using your oil for the first time, you should test it on an inconspicuous area, such as behind your ears or on your forearm. This way you can be sure that you do not have an allergic reaction or irritation.
If everything looks good, the best way to oil your hair is as following:
- First, brush your hair thoroughly as usual.
- Then apply 1-2 pipettes evenly to your scalp. Alternatively, you can first put it in the palm of your hand and warm it between your hands.
- Massage your scalp with a head massage brush or your fingers to work the oil in thoroughly. Make sure you massage the skin with your fingertips and not your nails. Work in very small movements so that the skin moves slightly, but without tugging your hair back and forth.
- Then work the oil into the lengths and ends as well.
- Then tie your hair into a loose bun or braid and leave the oil on for between three and five hours.
- Then wash your hair as usual. It is best to use a mild shampoo and shampoo your hair twice to really remove any oil residue.
You can use this beauty treatment every one to two weeks. However, the frequency varies depending on your hair type. For very fine hair, every two to three weeks is sufficient.
Even if you only wash your hair once a week, it is enough to apply the oiling every other time you wash your hair.
Which oils are suitable for hair oiling?
Rosemary oil in particular seems to have received a significant boost from social media. Every influencer with silky, shiny and healthy hair swears by rosemary water or the matching oil. Rosemary oil is also known for stimulating hair growth .
But be careful! This herbal oil is an essential oil and should never be used in its pure form. It can cause irritation and do more harm than good to your scalp.
Instead, you should always mix rosemary oil with a mild carrier oil or buy an already mixed oil.
Mild oils that are perfect for hair oiling or mixing are:
- Coconut oil
- Argan oil
- Avocado oil
- Almond oil
- Castor oil
However, always make sure that you buy a pure product without additives. It should not contain any silicones or fragrances.
Risks of Hair Oiling
However, there are a few points you should keep in mind when adopting this hair care trend. Otherwise, you risk negative effects, such as:
- The oil weighs down the hair (for example, if you have thin hair). Thin, straight hair types should use smaller amounts of oil and not do hair oiling too often. It is also very important to rinse thoroughly so that the hair is not weighed down after use.
- It has a negative effect on the scalp. As with so many treatments, too much of a good thing can backfire. You should therefore definitely not do hair oiling too often.
- Dirt can build up, but only if the oil is not washed out properly. Always wash your hair twice after using the oil.
- Irritation may occur. Be sure to do a patch test beforehand to avoid irritation and stick to the exposure time.
Pro tip for healthy, shiny hair
But hair oiling is not enough to keep your hair healthy. It is especially important to protect your hair from enemy number 1. Heat is one of the things that damages your hair the most. That is why it is extremely important to protect your hair from heat with special care or styling products.
Matching styling oils are the ideal choice to give your hair an even more beautiful shine after washing and at the same time protect it from harmful blow-drying and styling heat.
