Salicylic Acid Face: The best peelings & Co. with BHA

Salicylic acid is an effective ingredient for blackheads and skin prone to blemishes and acne. The active ingredient is also available over the counter and can be found in a wide variety of skin care products, such as creams, cleansers, serums and peels.

What is salicylic acid?

Salicylic acid belongs to the group of beta hydroxy acids (BHA) and is obtained from willow bark extract. It has a keratolytic effect, which means it dissolves dead skin cells and promotes cell renewal. This means it can clear clogged pores, regulate sebum production and help to improve the complexion. At the same time, it is considered anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, which also benefits skin prone to acne and blemishes.

Benefits of Salicylic Acid (BHA)

  • Fights acne and impurities: Salicylic acid penetrates deep into the pores, dissolves sebum and dead skin cells and thus prevents new pimples and blackheads.
  • Refines pores: By cleaning the pores, they appear smaller and less visible.
  • Reduces inflammation: Salicylic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect and soothes reddened skin.
  • Improves the complexion: Cell renewal ensures a more even complexion and reduces pigment spots.

Products containing salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is available in various facial care products:

  • Facial cleanser: Cleanses the skin deep down to the pores and prevents impurities.
  • Peelings: Remove dead skin cells and promote cell renewal.
  • Creams and serums: Care for the skin and act specifically against impurities.
  • Masks: intensive treatment for impure skin.
  • Toner: Remove residue and clarify the skin.

The concentrations of salicylic acid (BHA) in over-the-counter products vary between 0.5 and 2%. Higher concentrations are only available in prescription products and are only necessary if you are prone to severe acne.

Is salicylic acid good for the face?

Yes, salicylic acid is generally well tolerated and can be used on most skin types. It is particularly suitable for oily, blemished and acne-prone skin. However, if you have sensitive skin, you should be careful and test the products on a small area first.

Should you use salicylic acid every day?

The frequency of application depends on the concentration of salicylic acid and the individual skin type. At low concentrations, salicylic acid can be used daily. At higher concentrations or if the skin is sensitive, the application should be limited to 1-2 times a week.

Especially when you first start using a high-dose formulation, it is advisable to slowly integrate the product into your facial care routine. This way, your skin can slowly get used to the new ingredient.

Important: Be sure to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day (!), as the salicylic acid makes your skin more sensitive.
